When couples picture their destination wedding in Italy, they often imagine the big moments, the long candlelit dinner, the dancing under the stars, the late-night limoncello shots.
But there’s one moment that sits quietly at the centre of it all...
The ceremony!
Although it’s often the shortest part of the day, it can become one of the most emotional and memorable experiences of the entire celebration.
The good news? There are so many beautiful ways to make your ceremony feel personal, meaningful and uniquely yours.
Here are some ideas we love.
Encourage Everyone to Be Fully Present
One of the most powerful ways to elevate your ceremony is surprisingly simple: ask guests to put their phones away.
Many couples now choose to have an “unplugged ceremony.” This means guests are invited to keep phones and cameras in their pockets until the very end.
Why?
Because it encourages everyone to be completely present in the moment with you.
Instead of viewing your ceremony through a screen, your guests are truly watching, listening and feeling every word.
At the end of the ceremony, you can invite everyone to take one celebratory photo together before the celebrations continue. It becomes a fun moment, and you’ll have beautiful professional photos capturing the ceremony without a sea of phones in the air.
Your officiant can make this request to have an unplugged ceremony before the bride walks down the aisle, but the request should also be communicated from the couple on the run up to the wedding to try to get everyone to comply with our request.
Take a Moment to Look Around
One piece of advice we always give couples is this:
Pause. Take a breath. Look around.
Your guests have travelled from different countries, different cities, different parts of your lives, all gathered in one place.
These are the people who love you most.
Your ceremony is the one moment where you get to see everyone together.
Take a moment to look at their faces. To take it all in. It’s a feeling couples often say becomes one of their most treasured memories of the day.
Write Your Own Vows
If you’re comfortable doing so, writing your own vows can transform your ceremony.
They don’t need to be long or poetic. The most powerful vows are often simple and honest.
You might include:
A story from your relationship
What you admire most about your partner
Promises for your future together
A touch of humour
Your vows don’t have to be perfect, they just need to be genuine.
Invite Meaningful Readings
Another beautiful way to personalise your ceremony is through readings from people who mean something to you.
This doesn’t have to be limited to your bridal party.
Some lovely options include:
A special aunt or uncle
A lifelong family friend
A sibling who isn’t in the wedding party
A mentor or godparent
Often the most touching readings come from people who have known you for years and have watched your story unfold.
Private Words from Loved Ones
If someone close to you isn’t comfortable speaking publicly, there’s another lovely option.
They can write a private letter that is read during the ceremony by the celebrant.
For example, a Maid of Honour or parent might write a message sharing their hopes and love for your future together.
This can be incredibly emotional and meaningful without putting anyone under pressure to speak.
Make the Ring Bearer Special
Ring bearers don’t have to be traditional.
Of course, a young niece or nephew walking down the aisle is adorable, but you could also choose someone unexpected and meaningful.
Ideas include:
A beloved grandparent
A sibling
A best friend
A child who is important in your life
It’s a simple way to involve someone special in a meaningful moment.
Create a Memorable “First Kiss” Moment

Your first kiss as a married couple is naturally a highlight and there are fun ways to make it even more memorable.
One increasingly popular idea is using coloured smoke bombs behind you as you kiss. The effect can be stunning in photographs.
When done safely and coordinated with your photographer, it creates a dramatic and celebratory moment that feels truly cinematic.
Choose Music That Means Something
Music can completely transform the atmosphere of your ceremony.
Instead of traditional wedding music, many couples now choose songs that hold personal meaning.
Some ideas include:
A live acoustic version of your favourite song
Instrumental versions of meaningful music
A string quartet playing something unexpected
Music helps set the emotional tone from the moment your guests arrive.
Consider Symbolic Rituals Carefully
Some couples choose to include symbolic rituals such as:
Sand ceremonies
Wine blending rituals
Handfasting traditions
These can be meaningful representations of unity.
However, they often require a table setup at the front of the ceremony space, which can sometimes interrupt the visual simplicity of the setting, particularly in photographs.
They can also be a little complicated or messy if not carefully planned.
For this reason, many couples choose to keep the ceremony simple and personal instead.
Walk Back Down the Aisle Together

After the ceremony, your walk back down the aisle as newlyweds is a moment of pure joy!
Guests cheering, music playing, the relief and excitement of just being married.
Some couples add a playful twist here, such as:
Confetti tosses
Petal showers
Bubbles for guests to blow
Live musicians leading the celebration
It’s the perfect transition from ceremony to celebration.
Remember What the Ceremony Is Really About
Your ceremony may only last 20 to 30 minutes, compared to the long dinner and party that follows.
But when prepared with love and care, it can become one of the most impactful moments of your entire wedding.
It’s the moment where:
You speak your promises
Your families witness your commitment
Your guests share in your story
All the people who love you most are gathered together, wishing you nothing but happiness for the future.
And that, ultimately, is what makes a wedding ceremony truly unforgettable.
